ALL NATURAL.

The Tar™ formulation is the result of a meticulously developed, all-natural process that prioritizes both environmental sustainability and skin safety. At the core of this method is philodendron resin, sourced from the wild bipinnatifidum species found throughout Florida and the southeastern United States. While commonly cultivated as a houseplant, in its natural form the bipinnatifidum can grow aggressively, with underground vines stretching over 70 yards and disrupting native tree systems.

We collect this resin directly from the wild vines, then combine it with natively sourced turpentine to initiate a transformation. When heated, this blend forms a reactive silica structure — a key foundation for the final material. Additional natural agents are used throughout the process, including plant-derived thickeners, color deepeners, and heat absorbents, all contributing to the distinct texture and finish.

This multi-stage method is slow and labor-intensive by design, honoring traditional craft while using only biodegradable, non-toxic components. The end result is a material that is both innovative and rooted in the ecosystems from which it was born.

 FAQs

  • Yes, the Tar™ is completely skin safe and will not cause irritation. All ingredients are natural and non-toxic.

  • Absolutely. The Tar™ is 100% biodegradable and made entirely from natural materials, including wild plants and sustainably sourced resins.

  • We recommend washing with cold water and air drying to preserve the integrity of the material.

  • Each piece is coated in a blend of locally sourced beeswax and clove oil. Beyond its warm, earthy scent, this also acts as a natural insect repellent.

Water-Resistant

Our tar is treated and refined with all-natural binders like turpentine, creating a deeply hydrophobic surface. It shrugs off rain, snow, and moisture — making it ideal for unpredictable weather.

Slash-Proof

Once cured, the tar forms a dense, rubber-like shell that resists tearing and slashing. The tough body structure adds a layer of durability that standard fabrics can’t match.

Fire-Resistance

Exposed to high heat, our tar doesn’t melt or ignite easily. It's processed with an intense heat treatment, giving it natural fire-resistant properties without the use of synthetics or harsh chemicals.

Use Cases

Originally developed for outerwear, our tar coating adds serious protection to hoodies, jackets, bags, and footwear — perfect for designers pushing functionality and edge. Its rugged, weatherproof quality makes it ideal for festival gear, utility fashion, or survival-inspired pieces. Beyond apparel, the tar can be applied to industrial aprons, tool rolls, bike bags, and even sculpture or set design where texture and resilience are key. Whether you're prototyping a concept line or producing in bulk, this material opens new ground for hybrid fashion and gear.

Pigmentation

Our tar can be customized to nearly any color using natural pigments or paints. From deep blacks made with sumi ink to muted tones achieved with ground charcoal, we’re able to offer a full spectrum of earthy or vivid finishes. This flexibility allows you to match your creative vision while keeping the material entirely natural and non-toxic.
